Conifers or evergreen trees have one of two types of leaf shapes: scale-leaf and needle-leaf. A scale-leaf is flat and scaly. Cedars are scale-leaf trees. Needle-leaf needles can be long and in clusters (pine trees) or short without clusters (spruce trees). To identify the species of a needle-leaf conifer with long leaves in clusters it is helpful to know the number of needles in that cluster. For example, White Pines have five needles in a cluster. he number of needles in that cluster. For example, White Pines have 5 needles in a cluster.
