January 2, 2009, Newsletter Issue #150: The Best Hiking Socks
1
Tip of the Week
Sierra Trading Post Tip: One rule about socks not to forget is DON'T wear cotton socks when you hike. These socks retain moisture instead of wicking it away from your feet. In the summer, that can make your feet hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable. However, in the winter, the water can literally freeze and can cause frostbite if it's cold enough.
The best hiking socks are the hiking socks that protect your feet from the elements and blisters. Always start with a lightweight nylon or propylene sock that will wick water away from your feet. Then top with a wool or wool-blend sock for comfort and extra cushioning. You'll find the mixture that's right for you as you break in your boots and start hiking.
