September 26, 2008, Newsletter Issue #136: Always Carry a Hiking Pole

Tip of the Week

Sierra Trading Post Tip: For some reason, carrying a hiking pole hasn't caught on in the U.S. like it has in Europe and other countries. Mountain hikers around the world wouldn't think of hiking without their trusty hiking pole.

Using a hiking pole just makes good sense. The hiking pole helps you maintain your balance and adds stability when you're traversing rocky terrain, crossing a stream, or carrying an extra heavy pack.

They also help alleviate stress on your back, legs, knees, and feet, which means you can hike longer in comfort. Going downhill they reduce stress on your back and legs, and going uphill they provide balance and a little extra kick-start of power.

Carrying a hiking pole may not be as common here in the U.S. as it is in Europe, but one you hike with a hiking pole, you won't leave it home in your closet when you head out for a hike!
