March 3, 2006, Newsletter Issue #6: Weighing Down the Kids

Tip of the Week

When you hike with kids, don't weigh them down with "stuff". A small water bottle for very young kids is great—particularly if you can attach it to their belt or somewhere out of their way. Put only a small amount of water in it so it's not heavy—you can refill it from your bottle. For kids 6 to 8, add a small backpack with a pencil and paper, and maybe even a pocket field guide (reading and research can follow you outdoors when you take field guides along) are enough to carry. Consider pinning a whistle to your child's jacket and talk about the conditions under which he should use the whistle; if you should become somehow separated during your walk, or if he should find himself in danger. Let him practice using the whistle before you head out and don't leave home without it! And don't forget to plan short hikes with ample time to stop and "smell the roses". After all, isn't that the real reason for the hike?
